Early life and background

Christian Atsu Twasam was born on 10 January 1992 in Ada Foah in Ghana's Greater Accra Region. Raised in a devout Christian household, he credited his faith as a central force in his life and frequently shared scripture on social media. He attended Madina Nakwantang BA 2 Primary School and came from a family with roots in both the Ada and Ewe ethnic groups.

Career

Atsu's football education began in Ghana, progressing through local youth setups including Peace F.C., the Feyenoord Football Academy in Gomoa Fetteh, the West African Football Academy at Sogakope, and Cheetah F.C. A successful trial with Portuguese side FC Porto led to his move to Porto's youth ranks in January 2010. He was part of the Porto youth side that won the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Porto subsequently sent him on loan to Rio Ave for the 2011–12 season, where he made his Liga Portugal debut on 28 August 2011. He returned to Porto for the 2012–13 season and also spent time on Chelsea's books after a transfer in September 2013. Although signed by Chelsea, Atsu was loaned out to several clubs to gain first-team experience, including Vitesse Arnhem for the 2013–14 season, Everton for 2014–15, AFC Bournemouth for 2015–16, and Malaga in early 2016.

In August 2016 Atsu joined Newcastle United initially on loan; the club exercised a buy option in May 2017 and signed him to a permanent contract. Rafael Ben�tez, then Newcastle manager, praised Atsu as one of the most talented African players of his generation. He went on to represent clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey later in his career, signing for Al-Raed in July 2021 and joining Hatayspor in September 2022.

International career

Atsu made his senior debut for the Ghana national team on 1 June 2012 against Lesotho and wore the number 7 shirt for his country. He represented Ghana at multiple major tournaments, including the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. At youth level he won individual recognition at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup and later earned tournament honours at the Africa Cup of Nations, including a Player of the Tournament award in 2015 and selection to Team of the Tournament lists.

Atsu was primarily deployed as a left winger but also featured as a midfielder and on occasion at left back. He was known for his quickness, direct attacking play and set-piece ability. Death and tributes

Christian Atsu went missing after the 6 February 2023 earthquake in southern Turkey when the Ronesans Rezidans building in Hatay province collapsed. Initial reports alternated between hope and concern as teammates and club officials searched for him. On 18 February 2023 his death was confirmed after his body was recovered from the rubble. His remains were flown from Istanbul to Accra on 19 February 2023 for burial. Tributes poured in from former teammates, clubs and public figures in Ghana and beyond, with moments of silence and personal dedications observed in his honour.
