Early life and background

Christopher Chenappa Bhatti was born in 1978 and grew up in Khanapur, Karnataka. He was the son of Chennaya Bhatti, who worked at a paper mill, and his wife Saroja. Christopher was one of several children; his elder brother Chemaya was described as mentally unstable. According to his family, Christopher was the only member of the household to receive a formal education. His mother recalled that he was known locally for playing the tabla and that he sometimes played the harmonica at church.

Career

In 2000 Christopher was introduced to Abdul Karim Telgi by his brother-in-law Arun Hurli, who lived nearby. Telgi offered Christopher employment in the counterfeit stamp-paper operation that Telgi ran out of Chennai, and Christopher accepted. He worked in that enterprise and served as a driver for Telgi. While employed there, Christopher sent regular financial support home; his parents said he contributed about Rs. 2,000 a month toward household expenses.

Reports in the public record indicate a dispute over missing funds during Christopher’s time with Telgi. Various accounts allege that Christopher, along with at least one other associate, took money from the operation — figures reported in different sources include around Rs. 3 lakhs and Rs. 1,80,000 — and that Telgi sought to recover the sums. Those reports say Telgi summoned Christopher to Mumbai to resolve the matter.

Death and investigation

On 27 August 2001 Christopher Bhatti was killed after being subjected to severe assault. He went to Mumbai with Arun Hurli to meet Telgi near the Minoo Manor building in Cuffe Parade; instead of resolving the dispute, sources report that Telgi’s associates beat Christopher with hockey sticks and inflicted further injuries by burning him with cigarettes. After the assault, Telgi is reported to have placed Christopher’s body in a car trunk and disposed of it in Mahim Creek. The body was recovered from the creek the following day but was not immediately identified.

Initial policing resulted in a case being registered at Shahu Nagar Police Station and preservation of clothing and photographs for future identification. In the months that followed, investigative leads connected the case to the wider probe into Telgi’s stamp-paper operation. During that longer investigation one of Telgi’s associates provided information implicating those involved in Christopher’s death, prompting a fresh inquiry by local police and later the Mumbai Crime Branch.

Forensic work played a central role in confirming the victim’s identity. Specialists examined a bandage recovered with the body and compared DNA from blood on that bandage with blood samples linked to Telgi’s residence and vehicle. Investigators concluded the bandage was of a type used in Telgi’s operation and that the DNA evidence established that the body was Christopher’s and that he had been murdered by Telgi and his associates.

On 29 November 2007 a special CBI court convicted Abdul Karim Telgi and four associates — Sajid Khan, Mohammed Ghaus Shigwe, Maqdum Hussain, and Kalim Bandenawaz — under IPC Section 304 Part II in connection with Christopher’s murder.
