Early life and backgroundChristopher Sembroski was born on August 28, 1979, in Kannapolis, North Carolina. He grew up with an interest in space that traces back to seeing a rocket launch in person, an experience he has said had a lasting impact on him. He attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and went on to study at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida and the Community College of the Air Force in Alabama, earning an Associate of Science from the latter and a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics.
Career
Sembroski served in the U.S. Air Force where he worked as a Missile and Space Systems Electronics Maintenance Journeyman and later advanced to the role of Air Transportation Journeyman. During his military career he also volunteered for deployment to Iraq. After leaving active duty, he moved into technical and engineering roles in the civilian sector.
By 2014 he had joined MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions in Everett, Washington, serving as a Senior Building Performance Specialist and remaining with the company through October 2020. He has worked as a data engineer and held technical positions with firms including ATS Automation Inc. In addition to his professional work, Sembroski participated in outreach and education activities earlier in his career, including counseling at a government-funded space camp in Alabama that focused on promoting science, technology, engineering and related subjects.
Inspiration4 and spaceflight
In March 2021 Sembroski was announced as one of the four people selected to fly on Inspiration4, the first all-civilian orbital mission organized by Jared Isaacman. The flight was planned as a multi-day mission in low Earth orbit with the purpose of raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. Ticket spots for the mission were distributed, in part, through a raffle conducted online that generated tens of thousands of entries; Isaacman used the raffle and related fundraising efforts to support the charity.
Sembroski initially applied for a ticket himself and later received a seat that had been donated by a college friend who had been shortlisted. The Inspiration4 crew completed training at SpaceX facilities in California, underwent medical and fitness evaluations at the University of California, Los Angeles, and experienced high-G centrifuge training at the National Aerospace Training and Research Center in Pennsylvania. On the mission the four crew positions were each associated with an attribute: leadership, generosity, hope, and prosperity, with Sembroski representing generosity.
Public profile
Sembroski is known publicly for his role on the Inspiration4 mission and for sharing his enthusiasm for space and rocketry. He has green eyes, brown hair, and is approximately 1.73 meters (5 feet 8 inches) tall.
