Early life and background

Chunky Panday was born Suyash Sharad Pandey on 26 September 1962 in Mumbai, where he was also raised. He trained in acting and dancing at Mumbai’s Madhumati Academy of Film Dancing & Acting and took additional acting classes at the Daisy Irani Acting School. His family includes medical professionals: his father, Sharad Panday, was a heart surgeon who took part in India’s first heart transplant team, and his mother, Snehlata Pandey, is a doctor.

Career

Chunky made his Hindi film debut in 1987 with Aag Hi Aag, playing the role of Vijay Singh. During the late 1980s and early 1990s he appeared in several multi-starrer films that brought him wide recognition, including Paap Ki Duniya (1988), Gunahon Ka Faisla (1988), Tezaab (1988) and Aankhen (1993). For his performance in Tezaab he received Filmfare nominations in 1989 for Best Supporting Actor and Best Performance in a Comic Role.

Following those early successes, his film career experienced ups and downs. Chunky accepted leading roles in Bangladeshi cinema and became a popular figure there, with notable films such as Meyerao Manush (1990), Shami Keno Asami (1997) and Prem Korechi Besh Korechi (2005). He continued to work in Hindi cinema in supporting and comic roles through the late 1990s and 2000s, appearing in films including Tirchhi Topiwale (1998), Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan (1999), Kaun Rokega Mujhe (1997) and Jwalamukhi (2000).

From the mid-2000s onward he returned more regularly to mainstream Hindi films, with credits that include Apna Sapna Money Money (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007) and De Dana Dan (2009). His comic persona Aakhiri Pasta became a recurring character across the Housefull franchise—Housefull (2010), Housefull 2 (2012), Housefull 3 (2016) and Housefull 4 (2019)—and is among his most recognized contributions to recent commercial cinema.

Chunky also expanded into other languages and formats. He played roles in Tamil and Gujarati cinema, with appearances such as a supporting part in the Tamil film Sardar (2022) and the Gujarati film Nayika Devi—The Warrior Queen (2022), in which he portrayed Muhammad Ghori. On the digital front he appeared in the web series Abhay 2 (2020) as the character Harsh; this performance earned him an IWM Buzz Digital Award in 2021 for Most Popular Negative Character in a Web Series (Male).
