Early life and background

Coco Lee was born Ferren Coco Lee on 17 January 1975 in British Hong Kong. Her family moved to San Francisco when she was nine, and she grew up there, attending Presidio Middle School and Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School. Lee enrolled at the University of California, Irvine, but left after her freshman year to pursue a singing career full time. Her mother, a surgeon, and her elder sister Nancy encouraged her early interest in music.

Career

Lee launched a recording career across several languages, beginning with appearances on Cantonese compilation projects in the early 1990s and issuing full-length Cantonese, Mandarin and English releases through the decade. Her first credited Cantonese appearance came in 1993, and she released Mandarin and English albums in 1994 and 1995 respectively. A 1996 Mandarin album released after she signed with Sony Music became the region's top-selling record for the year, and a 1998 Mandarin album sold roughly one million copies within months of release.

Her recordings and performances crossed from Asia into international entertainment. In 1998 she sang the Mandarin version of a theme song for the Disney film Mulan and provided the Mandarin voice for the film's lead. In 2001 she recorded the song "A Love Before Time" for the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and performed it on the Academy Awards stage, becoming the first Chinese-American artist to appear there in that capacity.

Lee released English-language albums as well, and her 2005 English album was released under Sony BMG. She recorded songs that were used in films and large events: one of her songs featured on the soundtrack for the Hollywood film Runaway Bride, another was used during World Cup broadcasts, and she performed at high-profile concerts and benefit events, including Michael Jackson's charity concert in 1999 and Olympic-related performances in 2008.

Beyond recording, Lee appeared in films and television. She had an acting credit in the 2004 Chinese comedy Master of Everything and a cameo in the 2015 Chinese coming-of-age film Forever Young. She also served as a judge on several Chinese reality talent shows, including Chinese Idol, Dancing With the Stars China, Super Idol and World’s Got Talent.

Collaborations, advocacy and public engagements

Throughout her career Lee worked with a range of artists across Asia and internationally. She released charity singles with other performers to support SARS patients, recorded an anti-racism song with a South Korean artist, and collaborated on public-service projects promoting environmental awareness. She travelled as a Youth AIDS ambassador to the global AIDS conference in Bangkok and took on spokesperson duties for charity campaigns such as the Cancer Fund’s Pink Revolution.

Lee was also active in fashion and brand work. She modeled as a spokesperson for luxury and beauty labels and was involved in high-profile events blending music and fashion, including an inaugural Fashion Rocks event in Asia.

Public profile

Lee was known for a multilingual repertoire and for crossing cultural boundaries as a Mandopop artist who reached audiences beyond Greater China. She was the first Asian artist to perform at the Academy Awards and was the first Chinese brand ambassador for Chanel. Her performances drew large crowds in Taiwan and other markets, and she maintained a public presence through magazine covers and fitness and lifestyle posts.

Personal life

Lee married businessman Bruce Rockowitz on 27 October 2011. The couple did not have children together; Rockowitz had two daughters from a previous marriage. Lee was close to her family, including her sister Nancy, who also served as her manager.

Health and death

In January 2023 Lee underwent major leg surgery. She later struggled with severe throat problems and lost her voice for a time due to acute bronchitis in 2016. In early July 2023 she was reported to have attempted suicide at home and went into a coma. She was taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong and died there on 5 July 2023 at the age of 48. Family members said she had been dealing with depression and had sought professional help.
