He grew up in Port Elizabeth and attended Woodridge College, where he played school cricket and captained the side for several years. He later took a scholarship to the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, where he continued his development and made his first-class debut for Free State in 2004.
Career
Ingram established himself as a left-handed top-order batsman and occasional wicketkeeper, also capable of bowling right-arm leg-break. He represented South Africa at youth level, appearing in the 2004 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh, and moved steadily through domestic ranks with teams including Eastern Province, Free State and the Warriors.
He made his international debut for South Africa in October 2010, turning out in both the Twenty20 and one-day formats against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein. In domestic T20 competitions he compiled significant runs, including a notable 502 runs in 14 innings during the 2016 NatWest T20 Blast, and he claimed the Royal London One-Day Cup Player of the Year Award at the NatWest PCA Awards in 2017. Ingram joined Adelaide Strikers for the 2017–18 Big Bash League and captained the side in several matches when Travis Head was unavailable; Adelaide won the tournament that season. He later took on captaincy roles for the Strikers in subsequent BBL seasons.
In the Indian Premier League, Delhi Daredevils acquired him at the 2011 auction and later Delhi Capitals bought him at the 2019 auction. He has also been part of the Pakistan Super League with Karachi Kings and featured in the Afghanistan Premier League for Kabul Zwanan.
