Early life and background

Conrad Kongkal Sangma was born on 27 January 1978 in Tura, Meghalaya. He grew up in a politically active family: his father, Purno Agitok Sangma, served as Chief Minister of Meghalaya and later as Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Sangma attended St. Columba's School in New Delhi before pursuing higher education abroad. He holds a BBA in Entrepreneurial Management and an MBA in Finance, with studies at the University of Pennsylvania and Imperial College London noted in his educational background.

Career

Sangma began his formal political career in the 2000s and entered the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2008. Early in his legislative tenure he took on significant responsibilities, serving as Cabinet Minister with portfolios that included Finance, Power and Tourism. During this period he became the youngest Finance Minister of Meghalaya at around age 30.

From 2009 to 2013 he served as Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. After losing a state assembly contest in 2013, Sangma returned to electoral office in 2016 when he won the Tura Parliamentary constituency in a bye-election and became a member of the 16th Lok Sabha. In 2016 he was also named to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy.

Sangma is the founder and leader of the National People's Party (NPP). Under his leadership the NPP won 19 seats in the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly elections. Following that result, the NPP formed a coalition government with several other regional parties and the BJP, and on 6 March 2018 Sangma was sworn in as the 12th Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

He continued to lead the state in the next term as well: on 7 March 2023 he was sworn in again as Chief Minister to head a coalition government for a consecutive term.

Beyond electoral politics, Sangma has held roles in sports and social initiatives. He serves as President of the Meghalaya Cricket Association and is associated with a sports academy and the P. A. Sangma Foundation. Music is a noted personal interest and a recreational pursuit; he plays guitar and piano and has organized musical events in the north-eastern region.
