Early life and background

Cyrus Broacha was born on 7 August 1971 in Mumbai and grew up in a family with roots in Bharuch, Gujarat. His father, Farokh Broacha, worked as a lawyer and his mother is Olivia Broacha. He has an elder sister named Giselle. Broacha attended St. Xavier’s College and later enrolled at Government Law College in Mumbai; he also trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York. He graduated in political science and began performing in plays and writing for school magazines from a very young age.

Career

Broacha’s onscreen career began early: at age 12 he appeared in the 1987 film Jalwa. His first professional stage appearance came in 1988 in Brighton Beach Memoirs under Pearl Padamsee, a role that drew early critical attention. Over the years he has worked across theatre, television, film, radio and digital audio.

On television he became widely known as a host and comedian. In 1999 he began presenting MTV Bakra, a hidden‑camera prank show that brought him visibility with younger audiences. From 2006 he hosted the satirical news show The Week That Wasn’t on CNN-News18, a late‑night programme that approached current affairs through humour and celebrity interviews. He has also presented cricket programmes including the Chevrolet Cricket Show on Ten Sports, served as host and editor on ESPNcricinfo Runorder, and annually hosted NDTV’s Greenathon. In 2007 he took part in the dance reality series Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 2), and in 2010 he appeared on the action reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi 3.

Broacha’s film work has included small but memorable roles in mainstream Hindi cinema. In 2009 he appeared in the crime comedy 99 and in Fruit and Nut, and he has provided voice work for the cartoon film Ramayana. He has also been featured in commercial campaigns for brands such as Dell, Pepsi and Unacademy.

Broacha is the author of several books. His first, Karl, Aaj Aur Kal, was released in January 2010 and blended semi‑autobiographical material with comedy. Subsequent books include The Average Indian Male (2011), Netagiri (2014), and 23 and 1/2 Ways to Make a Girl Fall for You (with editions noted in later years).

In 2015 he launched the comedy podcast Cyrus Says, which became one of his prominent projects. The podcast features conversations and interviews with actors, sportspersons and artists and built on his experience in radio and television.
