Following his arrest, the Central Bureau of Investigation carried out searches of Sasikumaran’s properties. The CBI reported assets that included residential properties in Thiruvananthapuram and a tract of land in an industrial estate in Tamil Nadu, estimating total assets at over Rs 55 lakh and detaining him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. By May 1996 the CBI concluded that the espionage case lacked supporting evidence; a court accepted that view and the accused were discharged.

After the arrest and the publicity surrounding the case, Sasikumaran was transferred within ISRO to the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad. After the legal matter was resolved he chose not to seek compensation for the period of alleged injustice, stating publicly that compensation should not be paid from taxpayers’ funds and that responsibility lay with the officials who had erred.

Sasikumaran is married; his wife is identified as a physician who in 1994 served as an assistant professor at the Medical College Thiruvananthapuram.
