Early life and background

Dasharathaiah Sudhakar was born on 28 March 1961 in Challakere, Karnataka. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Acharya Tulsi National College of Commerce (ATNCC) in Shimoga, affiliated with the University of Mysore. Known locally by the shortened form D Sudhakar, he made his home in Challakere and maintained a public profile in state politics for several decades.

Career

D Sudhakar built a long career in Karnataka politics as a member of the Indian National Congress. He was first elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 2004 from the Challakere constituency. Following that victory, he won election from the Hiriyur constituency and served that seat across multiple terms, including the 2008–2018 period when he was re-elected from Hiriyur.

Across his legislative tenure he held ministerial responsibilities in the Karnataka state government. He served as Minister of Social Welfare during 2008–2009, and later as Minister of Youth Affairs from 2010 to 2011. In May 2023 he was appointed Cabinet Minister for Planning & Statistics in the Government of Karnataka and continued in that role through 2026.

Public profile
