Early life and background

D. Sundaram (full name Sundaram Damodarannair) was born in 1956 and grew up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Chennai University and later qualified as a Cost Management Accountant from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. He also completed an Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.

Career

Sundaram began his professional journey at Hindustan Unilever Limited in June 1975 as a management trainee. Over roughly 34 years with the company he held a variety of finance and commercial roles, including corporate accountant, commercial manager and treasurer. During the 1990s he took on international responsibilities — serving as a finance officer covering Unilever’s Africa and Middle East operations from London and later as senior vice-president for finance, IT and strategy for South Asia and the Middle East.

He returned to Hindustan Unilever in 1999 as Finance & IT Director and was elevated to Vice Chairman in April 2008. His responsibilities during his tenure included oversight of finance functions across several South Asian markets, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He left the company in 2009.

In June 2009 Sundaram joined TVS Capital Funds (P) Limited as Managing Director and Vice Chairman. At TVS Capital he brought deep financial expertise and a strong understanding of consumer businesses to the private equity operations.

Beyond these two organisations, Sundaram has held a number of board and governance roles. He served as an independent director on the Board of the State Bank of India from January 2009 until June 2014 and was also associated with SBI Capital Markets. His board experience spans companies across financial services, consumer goods and industrials, including SBI General Insurance, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Limited, ACC Limited, Schneider Electric India and others.

Sundaram joined the Board of Infosys in 2017 and has participated in multiple board committees such as the Audit Committee, Risk Management Committee, Stakeholders Relationship Committee, Nomination & Remuneration Committee and the Cybersecurity Risk Sub-Committee. On 23 March 2023 he was named the lead independent director of Infosys, succeeding Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.

Sundaram has received industry recognition for his work in corporate finance. He was named “CFO of the Year for FMCG Sector” by CNBC TV18 in 2006 and again in 2008. He has also contributed to management education by delivering guest lectures on finance and management at institutions including SP Jain Institute of Management & Research in Mumbai.

He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Institute of Financial Management and Research, Chennai, since 2005.
