Early life and backgroundDnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil was born on 22 October 1935 in Ambap, a village in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. He grew up in a farming family and completed his school education in Kolhapur. Patil pursued higher studies at Rajaram College and later at Shivaji University in Kolhapur, earning bachelor's and master's level qualifications as well as a degree in legislative law.
Career
Patil entered public life in the 1950s. He began his political career as a Congress candidate and was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council in 1957, serving as mayor during that period. He advanced to state-level politics and was elected as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Panhala constituency in 1967 and again in 1972.
After years in elected office, Patil turned much of his attention to higher education. In 1984 he set up the first institutions under what became the D. Y. Over the following decades he expanded the group into medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, management, architecture, biotechnology, agriculture and other fields. Under his direction the D. Y. Patil network grew into a major private educational organisation with numerous universities, colleges, hospitals, research centres and schools across Maharashtra and other parts of India.
Patil's public service also included constitutional responsibilities. He was appointed Governor of Tripura and took oath on 27 November 2009. Later he served as Governor of Bihar, taking charge on 22 March 2013; while Governor of Bihar he additionally held the charge of Governor of West Bengal for a brief period in July 2014.

Locally, he was honoured by the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and recognised by regional media for his lifelong work in education and culture.
