Daggubati Purandeswari was born on 22 April 1959 in Madras (now Chennai), Madras State. She grew up in a large family rooted in Telugu cinema and state politics; her father was the actor-turned-politician Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao and her mother was Basavatarakam Nandamuri. Purandeswari is the second daughter among eight brothers and three sisters.

Her schooling took place at Sacred Heart Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai. She went on to study at the South Indian Educational Trust and Women’s College in Chennai, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature. She also completed a diploma in gemmology from the Gemmological Institute of India in Mumbai.

Purandeswari’s family connections include several public figures: her brother Nandamuri Balakrishna is a well-known actor, another brother has worked in film production, and members of the extended family include politicians and actors who are active in Andhra Pradesh and Telugu cinema. Her family has experienced several losses over the years, including the deaths of her mother in 1985 and her father in 1996.

Career

Purandeswari entered electoral politics in 2004 when she joined the Indian National Congress. In that year she won a Lok Sabha seat from the Bapatla constituency in Andhra Pradesh in her electoral debut. She won a second consecutive Lok Sabha election in 2009, this time from the Visakhapatnam constituency.

During her time with the Congress-led government, she served as Minister of State for Human Resource Development and later as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. After a decade with the Indian National Congress, she left the party in 2014 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Her electoral career has included both victories and defeats. In 2014 she contested as a BJP candidate and suffered her first electoral loss; she continued to serve the party in organizational roles, including as a spokesperson. In 2015 she was appointed co-in-charge of the Karnataka unit of the BJP and given responsibility for the party’s Mahila Morcha. She contested again in 2019 as a BJP candidate but was defeated.

Within the BJP organization she continued to rise: in 2020 she was appointed a national general secretary of the party. Most recently, on 4 July 2023, the central leadership of the BJP announced her as the President of the Andhra Pradesh BJP.

The couple have two children: a daughter, Nivedita, and a son, Hitesh Chenchuram.
