Early life and background

Tenzin Gyatso was born Lhamo Thondup on 6 July 1935 in Taktser, a village in Amdo, Tibet. Recognized by Tibetan authorities at a very young age as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, he was given the religious name Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso. His family background was agricultural: his father was Choekyong Tsering and his mother Diki Tsering. He grew up with several siblings, including brothers Gyalo Thondup, Thubten Jigme Norbu, Tenzin Choegyal and Lobsang Samden, and sisters Jetsun Pema and Tsering Dolma.

He spent his early years in Tibet and later made the Potala Palace in Lhasa his hometown. From childhood he showed curiosity about practical matters such as repairing watches, clocks and cars, while also beginning the religious education and practices that led to his role as spiritual leader.

Tenzin Gyatso became the 14th Dalai Lama and assumed responsibilities for the Tibetan people as a teenager. He served as both the spiritual leader and, for a period, the political leader of Tibet. In 1959, amid conflict with Chinese authorities, he left Tibet and established a community of Tibetan refugees in India; he has since lived in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

Over decades he has traveled and spoken widely, promoting nonviolence, human rights, secular ethics, interfaith understanding and the rights of women. He has authored more than forty books on topics that include happiness, compassion, meditation, wisdom and religion, and has established a global reputation as a spiritual teacher and public intellectual.
