Early life and background

Dale Willem Steyn was born on June 27, 1983, in Phalaborwa in South Africa’s Transvaal Province. He grew up in the same town and attended Merensky High School in Tzaneen. Steyn developed an early interest in cricket and began playing seriously as a child, eventually establishing himself as a fast bowler with a reputation for speed and aggression.

Career

Steyn made his international Test debut on December 17, 2004 against England and quickly became a central figure in South Africa’s pace attack. His One Day International debut followed on August 17, 2005 for an Asia XI, and his Twenty20 international debut came on November 23, 2007 against New Zealand. Over his career he wore the number 8 jersey for several teams, including domestic and franchise sides such as the Cape Cobras and Brisbane Heat, and represented Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

Renowned for his pace, Steyn delivered some of the fastest recorded balls in professional cricket, including speeds above 155 km/h in both IPL and ODI matches. His competitive nature and on-field aggression were defining traits, and he earned several nicknames that reflected his impact with the ball. Among his notable achievements is the distinction of being the only fast bowler to record a five-wicket haul against every Test-playing nation.

Steyn occupied the top positions in the ICC Test bowling rankings for extended periods between 2008 and 2014, marking him as one of the premier fast bowlers of his generation. Throughout his domestic and international stints he was known for a strong competitive instinct and the ability to produce match-defining spells.

On August 31, 2021 Steyn announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing to a close a long and celebrated playing career.
