Early life and backgroundDalip Tahil was born on 30 October 1952 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family with a father who served in the Indian Air Force. Tahil attended Sherwood College in Nainital for his schooling and later enrolled at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, where he completed his graduate studies after an initial brief spell at Aligarh Muslim University. During his school years he was active in sports — including cricket, hockey and football — and participated in debates and dramatic activities that pointed him toward a life on stage.
Career
Tahil began his professional acting journey in theatre. While in Mumbai he trained under notable theatre practitioners Alyque Padamsee and Pearl Padamsee and established himself in stage work. He won the Kendall Cup three times in 1969 for distinct stage performances, including roles in My Three Angels and Macbeth. His stage résumé includes musicals and plays such as Godspell, A Streetcar Named Desire, Evita and the musical Bombay Dreams; he also sang on stage and took part in the Bombay Dreams world tour with composer A. R. Rahman.
His screen debut came in the Hindi film Ankur (1974). Over the decades that followed Tahil built a large body of work across mediums. By 2017 he had appeared in over 100 Bollywood films.
