Early life and background

Damini Bhatla Ch was born on 17 October 1994 in Tadepalligudem, West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh. Raised in a family that moved to Hyderabad during her childhood, she began formal singing practice in 2004. Damini completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad, finishing her program in July 2018. She trained in Carnatic music at Bhairavi Sangeet Academy under Vyzarsu Balasubrahmanyam and later with Ramachary Komanduri. For Western vocal training she studied with Joe Koster.

Career

Damini’s early visibility came through reality singing competitions. She competed on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs (Telugu) in 2008 and won the Padutha Theeyaga show in 2011. Her performance work expanded into concerts, religious events and award-show appearances.

Her playback career includes a Malayalam film credit in 2014 for London Bridge and a breakthrough Telugu film credit in 2015 when she sang Pacha Bottasi for Baahubali: The Beginning, a recording that brought her wider recognition. Composer M. M. Keeravani noticed her at a local singing show and invited her to audition, the opportunity that led to the Baahubali recording.

In 2015 Damini formed the band Classically Mild and continued to develop as an independent artist. She participated in the Berklee India Exchange Bootcamp in April 2018. As an independent songwriter and recording artist she released her debut album First Things First in July 2020, which includes the tracks Sweet Nothings, Solitude Tales and Fly High; that album was featured on Spotify India’s Women of Indie India playlist in 2020. Subsequent independent releases include Twilight/Raathire (2022) and Love Wasn’t Enough (2023). In film music, she recorded the song Blast Baby for the 2022 film The Godfather.
