Early life and background

Daniel Reed Crenshaw was born on March 14, 1984, in Aberdeen, Scotland and grew up spending much of his childhood in Texas, with Houston identified as his hometown. His family moved frequently during his youth due to his father’s work, and Crenshaw attended school in several countries. That international upbringing included time in South America and schooling at Colegio Nueva Granada in Bogotá, where he developed fluency in Spanish.

He earned a BA in International Relations from Tufts University in 2006 and later completed a Master of Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School in 2017. While at Tufts he participated in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program and went on to attend Officer Candidate School following graduation.

Military career

Crenshaw served in the United States Navy from 2006 to 2016, ultimately reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training and subsequent SEAL Qualification Training, he was designated a Naval Special Warfare officer and joined SEAL Team Three under Naval Special Warfare Group 1.

During deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan he took part in operations supporting coalition and U.S. forces. In 2012, while on patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, he was severely wounded by an improvised explosive device. The blast caused multiple fractures and catastrophic damage to his eyesight, resulting in the loss of his right eye and partial impairment to his left retina. He returned to duty following recovery and continued to serve on deployments, including a later posting to the Middle East and a 2016 assignment to South Korea. He left the Navy in 2016.

Across his decade of service Crenshaw received several military decorations, including two Bronze Star Medals (one awarded for valour), a Purple Heart, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a valour device.

After leaving active duty, Crenshaw became involved with nonprofit work supporting wounded and disabled veterans. He also entered politics as a member of the Republican Party. In 2018 he ran for Congress in Texas’s 2nd congressional district, winning the primary runoff and the general election; he has been re-elected in subsequent cycles, including 2020 and 2022.
