Early life and background

Danny Phillip Dietz Jr. was born on January 26, 1980, in Aurora, Colorado. Raised in a family with ties to the military—his father, Danny Phillip Dietz Sr., served in the U.S. Navy—Dietz grew up in Colorado and completed his schooling at Heritage High School in Littleton, graduating in 1999. From a young age he showed an interest in physical pursuits: he trained in taekwondo to the level of black belt, played on his high school rugby team, enjoyed drawing and fishing, and had a fondness for rock climbing.

Career

Dietz enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 27, 1999. He completed initial training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and continued on to Gunner’s Mate “A” School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Pensacola, where he trained in radar operation. He then entered Class 232 of the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) program and later completed SEAL Qualification Training and SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) training. In January 2001 he was awarded the Special Warfare insignia and became a qualified Navy SEAL.

Assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team Two (SDVT-2), Dietz served as a petty officer second class (Gunner’s Mate) and held duties in ordnance and engineering within his task unit. He also attended the U.S. Army Airborne School to receive parachutist qualification. In April 2005 he deployed to Afghanistan as part of a Special Reconnaissance element supporting Naval Special Warfare Squadron TEN.

Operation Red Wings and death

On June 28, 2005, Dietz was one of four Navy SEALs on a reconnaissance mission in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, that became known as Operation Red Wings. The four-man team was led by Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy and included Petty Officer Second Class Matthew Axelson, Petty Officer Second Class Marcus A. Luttrell, and Dietz. During the mission the team encountered local herders and later came under attack by a large Taliban force.

In the firefight that followed, Dietz was wounded. Attempts to evade the attackers led to further injury: while being carried by a fellow SEAL after twisting his ankle, Dietz was struck by a bullet to the back of the head and killed. His remains were recovered by U.S. Air Force Pararescuemen on July 4, 2005. He was interred following a military funeral at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on July 14, 2005.

Honors and legacy

For his conduct during Operation Red Wings, Dietz was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously, as well as the Purple Heart. His decorations also include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and other service awards.

Several memorials commemorate Dietz. In Littleton, Colorado, a life-sized bronze statue was installed on July 4, 2007, depicting him at parade rest and including the description of his Navy Cross. A portion of roadway extending from Interstate 25 to Colorado State Highway 470 was designated the Danny Dietz Memorial Highway on August 18, 2009. His military uniform has been displayed in a Colorado museum as a tribute.

Family and personal life

Dietz married Maria Paz Leveque on March 14, 2003. At the time of his death he was 25 years old. His mother is Cynthia Dietz Marsh and he had siblings, including a brother Eric Dietz and a sister Tiffany Bitz. Following his death, his widow co-founded the Navy SEAL Danny Dietz Foundation to support U.S. veterans; she later remarried.

Other notes

Dietz owned a Yamaha YZF-R6 and had several tattoos. He enjoyed animals and kept two pet dogs. A biography titled Danny: The Virtues Within was published in 2013, and the 2013 film Lone Survivor depicted the events of Operation Red Wings; actor Emile Hirsch portrayed Dietz in the movie.
