Dario Fo Biography
Italian playwright, actor and director Dario Fo combined sharp political satire with commedia traditions to build a prolific, controversial career spanning
Early life and backgroundDario Luigi Angelo Fo was born on 24 March 1926 in Leggiuno in what was then the Kingdom of Italy. He grew up in Lombardy and spent parts of his childhood crossing the nearby Swiss border because of his father’s work with the railways. Stories gathered from his maternal grandfather and the people of Lombardy’s lakeside towns left a lasting mark on his imagination and later storytelling.
Fo moved to Milan in 1940 to attend the Brera Academy but left when World War II intensified. During the war years he found himself involved in complex circumstances, later returning to Milan to resume his studies in architecture at the Polytechnic University. He completed a degree in architectural studies, though he abandoned a thesis on Roman architecture and increasingly turned toward painting, acting and writing.
Career
Fo’s earliest recorded stage work dates to the early 1950s. He performed in the play Poer Nano (1951–52) and made his film debut in Marcello Marchesi’s Papaveri e papere (1952). In the years that followed he worked with radio actors and collaborators such as Franco Parenti, developing sketch work and comic storytelling that blended popular tales, biblical material and theatrical improvisation.
In the mid-1950s Fo met actress and playwright Franca Rame; they married in June 1954 and became a creative partnership for decades. The couple formed theatre companies that toured widely and staged plays that mixed farce, political critique and folk traditions. Early successful works included Archangels Don’t Play Pinball and other pieces that established Fo’s voice as a satirist of power and hypocrisy.
The 1960s and 1970s were a formative period. Fo and Rame took their work onto television and into civic debates, most notably with a 1962 variety-style programme on Italian television that aimed to bring theatre sensibilities and social commentary to a wide audience; censorship and disputes with broadcasters led to their withdrawal from television and a long ban from state TV. Fo used stage work to pursue pointed critiques of politics, social injustice and historical narratives — treating subjects from the Vietnam War and assassinations to labour conditions and corruption.
Several of Fo’s plays became internationally known. Mistero Buffo, a solo piece that drew on medieval mystery plays and popular storytelling, became a signature work. Accidental Death of an Anarchist, a scathing farce inspired by a real bombing and its fallout, and Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay!, which addressed economic hardship, were among the plays that brought him wide recognition and frequent controversy. He often collaborated with composer Fiorenzo Carpi and with Rame on acting and writing.
Fo’s output continued through the 1980s and 1990s with plays that touched on themes such as organised crime, institutional hypocrisy, and historical reinterpretation. Works from this later period included Trumpets and Raspberries and Johan Padan and the Discovery of the Americas. He remained active in staging new material that responded to contemporary events, from corruption scandals to global crises.
Awards and recognition
Fo received numerous awards during his life, including the Sonning Prize from Copenhagen University (1981), the Premio Eduardo (1985) and an Obie Award in New York (1986). The most internationally prominent honour arrived in 1997 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Public profile
Fo was a polarising figure whose theatrical practice repeatedly ran up against political and religious authorities. His improvisations on religious texts and his outspoken satire resulted in bans, censorship and public disputes, but also in strong support from audiences and cultural figures. He and Franca Rame faced attacks and intimidation at times, yet they continued to tour and perform widely, taking their work beyond Italy to audiences in Europe, China and the United States.
Personal life
Fo married Franca Rame on 24 June 1954 at the Basilica of Saint Ambrose in Milan. The couple had one son, Jacopo Fo. Fo’s parents were Felice Fo, a railway station master who also acted in amateur theatre, and Pina Rota Fo, who wrote about her life. He was the eldest of three siblings.
Later years and death
Dario Fo continued to write, perform and stage new material into his later life. He died on 13 October 2016 in Milan at the age of 90. The reported cause of death was respiratory disease.
Latest updates
Fo’s plays remain part of repertoires and discussions about political theatre and the use of popular forms to confront power. His collaborations with Franca Rame and their long-running theatre companies are frequently cited as influential models for politically engaged performance.
