Early life and background

Darshana Rajendran was born on 17 June 1988 and grew up in a family with strong ties to the arts and education. Her mother, Neeraja Rajendran, has worked as an actress, and her maternal grandfather, Dr N. Chandrasekharan Nair, received the Padma Shri in 2020 for contributions to literature and education. Darshana completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics at Lady Shri Ram College and went on to earn a master’s degree in financial economics from City, University of London.

Before turning to acting full time, Darshana worked in finance. While employed at the Institute of Financial Management and Research she became involved with theatre, which led her to join several Chennai theatre groups including Perch, The Little Theatre, Theatre Y, Stray Factory, Evam, and The Boardwalkers. Her early artistic interests were rooted in music; she sang as a child, participated in choirs and a cappella groups during college, and later pursued singing alongside acting.

Career

Darshana made her film debut in Malayalam with John Paul Vaathil Thurakkunnu (2014), playing Dr. Anna Paul. Her Tamil film debut came the following year in Moone Moonu Varthai (2015) as Keerthi. Over the years she has taken on a variety of roles across Malayalam and Tamil cinema and has also worked in digital projects.

In Malayalam cinema, she has appeared in titles such as Mayaanadhi (2017), Samarppanam (2017), Vijay Superum Pournamiyum (2019), C U Soon (2020), and Thuramukham (2023). Her performance in C U Soon earned her a nomination for the SIIMA Awards in 2021 in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Her Tamil film work includes roles in Kavan (2017) as Kalpana, Virus (2019) as Anjali Vasudevan, and Theeviram (2020) as Alia. In the Netflix Malayalam film Irul (2021) she played Archana Pillai. She also appeared in the film Dear Friend (2022) as Jannath and in the Hindi anthology web series Unpaused: Naya Safar (2022) as Geetha. Earlier in her screen career she featured in the Tamil web series Ctrl Alt Del (2016) in the role of Madhumitha.

As a playback singer, Darshana has lent her voice to several film songs, including Bavra Mann from Mayaanadhi (2017), Kattuneerin Chaalilayi from Sarcas Circa 2020 (2021), and the title track Darshana from Hridayam (2022).
