Early life and background

Daryl Joseph Mitchell was born on 20 May 1991 in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand. He grew up in a sporting household: his father, John Mitchell, was a rugby player and coach. During his childhood he spent time living in Manchester and London and later moved to Perth when his father took a coaching role there. Mitchell attended Southwell School and St Paul’s Collegiate in Hamilton before spending part of his school years at Hale School in Perth from 2005 to 2008.

He completed a Bachelor of Science in exercise and sports science at Edith Cowan University (2009–2012) and later undertook postgraduate study in sports and exercise at Auckland University of Technology. Mitchell also holds professional fitness qualifications, including ASCA level 1 in strength and conditioning and personal training certifications from the Australian Institute of Fitness.

Career

Mitchell began playing organised cricket at a young age and developed through both Australian and New Zealand domestic pathways. He featured for Scarborough and Hale School in Perth, and represented Western Australia age-group sides before returning to New Zealand cricket. He made his List A debut on 4 December 2011 and his first-class debut in March 2012; his domestic career included spells with Northern Districts, Canterbury and, in 2020, a move to Canterbury after many seasons at Northern Districts.

He progressed to New Zealand A in 2013 and captained a New Zealand XI against India A in 2020. Internationally, Mitchell made his T20 debut on 6 February 2019, his Test debut on 29 November 2019 and his ODI debut on 20 March 2021.

Mitchell established himself as a versatile middle-order batter and useful medium-pace option. On his Test debut he scored 73 in the first innings and later recorded his first Test century against Pakistan, an unbeaten 102. He was prolific in the 2022 Test series against England, scoring 482 runs across three matches — the most by any New Zealand player in a Test series against England — and producing innings of 190 and an unbeaten 62 in one Test that summer. In 2023 he joined an elite group of New Zealand players who have scored centuries in three consecutive Tests and became the first batsman to make a hundred in every match of an away Test series of three or more matches.

In limited-overs cricket he has contributed important performances for New Zealand. He scored his first ODI century, an unbeaten 100, against Bangladesh in March 2021, and recorded his first ODI World Cup century with 130 in the 2023 tournament. At the 2021 T20 World Cup he accumulated 208 runs in seven matches, including an unbeaten 72 in the semifinal versus England to help New Zealand reach the final. He followed up with strong displays in the 2022 T20 World Cup, scoring a not-out 53 in the semifinal against Pakistan.

Mitchell has also played widely in franchise and county cricket. His club career has included Blackpool in the Northern Premier League, Middlesex and Lancashire in English county competitions, London Spirit in The Hundred, and IPL stints — he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for the 2022 season and later acquired by Chennai Super Kings in the 2024 IPL auction. He has worn jersey numbers 75 for New Zealand and 47 in the IPL.

Off the field, Mitchell has worked in fitness and conditioning roles, including a period as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Waikato Rugby Club and earlier work as a personal trainer and sports consultant.
