Early life and background

Dayalan Hemalatha was born on 29 September 1994 and raised in the Alwarthirunagar neighbourhood of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She attended Dr K K Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School and went on to study at M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women in Chennai. She later completed a master of arts in human resource management.

Sport and games were part of her childhood: she played kho kho, athletics and volleyball, and would sometimes join boys from her neighbourhood for informal cricket games. Her father had a sporting background as a district-level kabaddi player. Hemalatha took up formal cricket training at the MAC Spin Foundation under coach Peter Fernandez when she was about seventeen.

Career

Hemalatha’s domestic progression began with selection to the Under‑19 Tamil Nadu side in 2011. She went on to represent Under‑19 South Zone and senior South Zone teams, and established herself in the senior Tamil Nadu side. She remained with Tamil Nadu through the 2019–20 season before moving to play for Indian Railways in the 2020–21 season.

As an all‑rounder she bats right‑handed and bowls right‑arm off‑spin. Her international debut came in 2018: she made her One Day International debut on 11 September 2018 against Sri Lanka in Galle, and her Twenty20 International debut on 9 November 2018 against New Zealand at Providence. She featured in five matches during the 2018 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies, scoring 21 runs and taking five wickets across that tournament.

Hemalatha has also been part of India squads that achieved team success. She was a member of the Indian team that won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022. In domestic and representative competitions she has been part of winning sides across formats: in the 2022–23 season she collected three trophies, winning the Senior T20 Trophy with Indian Railways, the Interzonal Trophy representing Central Zone, and the Challenger Trophy as a member of India‑D.

In franchise cricket, Hemalatha played in the Women’s T20 Challenge for Trailblazers in 2019 and 2020. In February 2023 she was acquired by Gujarat Giants at the inaugural Women’s Premier League auction.
