Early life and background

Debashree Roy was born on 8 August 1961 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Raised in a large family as one of seven children, she began performing at a very young age. Her earliest stage appearance came when she was only three, and she started working in films as a child artist at about six years old.

She trained in a variety of dance forms, including Indian classical, tribal and folk traditions. Her initial instruction came from family members, and she later studied under teachers such as Bandana Sen before receiving advanced training from the noted guru Kelucharan Mahapatra.

Career

Debashree’s screen career began in childhood. She appeared in films as a child artist and achieved wider recognition for early roles, including a notable performance as a young child in the 1971 Bengali film Kuheli. As she matured, she transitioned into leading roles; her early lead appearance is recorded in Nadi Theke Sagare (1978). Over the course of her career she has worked in more than a hundred films across languages including Bengali, Hindi and Tamil.

Alongside acting, Roy developed a parallel career as a professional dancer and choreographer. In 2011 Roy entered electoral politics as a member of the All India Trinamool Congress. That year she contested the West Bengal assembly election from the Raidighi constituency and won, defeating a candidate from the CPI(M). She served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for that constituency.

In March 2021 she left the Trinamool Congress; contemporaneous reports indicate her departure followed the party’s decision about candidate selection for the upcoming West Bengal legislative election.

Personal life

Debashree Roy’s parents are Birendra Kishore Roy and Arati Roy. She was married to actor Prosenjit Chatterjee from 1992 until their divorce in 1995. She has no children. Her family connections include a relation to Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji, who is her niece on the maternal side.

Roy’s interests outside professional work include cooking, travel, writing and reading. She has spoken publicly about preferences such as certain foods and literary figures, and is known to maintain a disciplined public image: she does not smoke or drink.
