Notable reporting: the 1992 Ajmer case
Chaudhary and Navajyoti became widely known for their reporting on the Ajmer serial rape and blackmail case that emerged in 1992. The reporting detailed how a group of local men sexually exploited and photographed young girls, then used those images to blackmail victims. According to accounts from that time, the coverage included descriptions of victims being taken to secluded properties where assaults occurred and images were developed at a local photo studio.
As editor, Chaudhary later said the decision to publish the story was difficult because some of the accused were linked to influential local figures. He judged that exposing the events publicly was a necessary step to prompt action by local authorities. The coverage prompted police inquiries, FIRs, and eventual charges against multiple men. The case produced significant local tension and drew attention to barriers victims faced in coming forward. Chaudhary’s reporting is credited with forcing wider awareness and official response to the scandal.
