Early life and background

Deep Sidhu was born on 2 April 1984 in Muktsar, Punjab. He grew up in his hometown and pursued legal studies, eventually earning a Bachelor of Laws. His father, Sardar Surjit Singh, worked as a lawyer. Deep's mother died when he was four years old. He had at least one sibling, a brother named Mandeep Singh.

Before moving into modelling and films, Sidhu practised law professionally. Early roles in his legal career included working as a legal advisor for Sahara India Pariwar and later with the British law firm Hammonds, which handled clients in the media industry. For around three and a half years he served as legal head at Balaji Telefilms. He also established his own legal practice, Lex Legal, and counted several prominent production houses and media companies among his clients.

Career

Sidhu transitioned from law into modelling and acting. During his college years and early career he won several modelling and talent titles, including the Kingfisher Model Hunt and Grasim Mr. Personality and Mr. Talented in 2014. He modelled for well-known designers and walked the ramp for names such as Hemant Trivedi and Rohit Gandhi.

His film debut came in 2015 with the Punjabi feature Ramta Jogi, produced under Vijayta Films. Over the next several years he appeared in regional cinema, including the films Jora 10 Numbaria (2017) and Saade Aale (2018). Saade Aale notably became the first Punjabi film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. His last released film before the COVID-19 lockdown was Jora: The Second Chapter, which premiered in March 2020.

Throughout his legal and entertainment career he worked alongside or had professional connections with several senior Indian lawyers and industry figures. At different times his professional life spanned law firms, film production houses and performing work in front of the camera.

Public profile

Sidhu was publicly active beyond film and law. He participated in the 2020–2021 farmers' protests against three farm bills and was present at protest sites for several weeks. On 26 January 2021 a tractor rally associated with the protests moved toward the Red Fort and actions at that site drew significant media and public attention. Sidhu faced criticism and allegations related to the events of that day; he disputed responsibility for reported incidents and maintained that certain actions occurred in the heat of the moment.

In January and February 2021 he was the subject of official scrutiny. The National Investigation Agency issued a summons in connection with a case involving an outlawed organisation, which Sidhu rejected as unfounded. Delhi Police announced a cash reward for information leading to his arrest, and he was subsequently arrested in early February 2021 by a Special Cell unit in Punjab. He had also been photographed alongside public figures in the period around the protests, which added to public discussion about his role in the events.

At the time of his death Sidhu was unmarried. He had been linked publicly with actress Reena Rai. His physical presence was notable: he stood about 183 cm (6 feet) tall and had brown eyes and black hair. His zodiac sign was Aries.

Death

Deep Sidhu died on 15 February 2022 at the age of 37. The reported cause of death was a car accident on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway that bypasses Delhi.
