Early life and background
Deepa Mehta was born on 1 January 1950 in Amritsar, Punjab, India. She grew up in a household familiar with Indian commercial cinema; her father worked as a film distributor. As a child she moved with her family to Delhi and later attended Welham Girls High School in Dehradun. Mehta completed a degree in Hindu philosophy at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi. Her early viewing included both Indian auteurs and international directors, a breadth of exposure that would later inform her filmmaking.

Career
Mehta began her career creating documentaries for an Indian government production company. Her first credited directorial documentary is At 99: A Portrait of Louise Tandy Murch (1975). She moved to Canada after marrying Canadian documentarian Paul Saltzman; the couple relocated to Toronto in 1973 and co-founded Sunrise Films. In Canada Mehta produced documentaries and a television series, Spread Your Wings (1976–1981), where she worked as director, executive producer and writer on several episodes.

Her feature film directorial debut came with Martha, Ruth and Edie (1988), a project she also produced. Over the following decades Mehta established herself as a writer, producer and director with a focus on socially charged stories. She wrote Fire (1996) and directed it as part of a body of work that interrogates social taboos. Fire, Earth (1998) and Water (2005) are often grouped together as her Elements Trilogy; the films address themes ranging from sexual autonomy to the trauma of partition and the treatment of widows.

Water’s production faced significant opposition in India that delayed filming for several years; Mehta ultimately filmed the story in Sri Lanka under an alternate title. The finished film received international recognition, multiple Genie Award nominations and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Between and after the trilogy entries, Mehta made a variety of films across genres. She directed Bollywood/Hollywood (2002) and The Republic of Love (2003) before completing Water. Later projects included The Forgotten Woman (2008) and Heaven on Earth (2008), both centering on women’s experiences, and Midnight’s Children (2012), an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received multiple Canadian Screen Award nominations.

Mehta has also worked in other capacities on film and television productions, with credits as writer, producer and occasional actor. She co-founded Hamilton-Mehta Productions in 1996 with producer David Hamilton and has maintained an active international festival presence throughout her career.

Public profile
Mehta’s films have provoked strong public responses as well as critical acclaim. Fire drew intense controversy on release and resulted in protests; Water’s production was disrupted by protesters who destroyed sets and threatened the crew, forcing a relocation of filming. Mehta married Paul Saltzman in 1970; the couple moved to Canada and had a daughter, Devyani Saltzman, before divorcing in 1983. She later married producer David Hamilton. Her family includes brother Dilip Mehta, an Indo-Canadian photojournalist. Mehta is a Canadian national and has spoken publicly about Hindu philosophy and its intellectual traditions.
