Early life and background

Deepak Madhukant Antani was born on 20 September 1964 in Bhuj, Gujarat. He completed a diploma in electrical engineering in 1984 and later earned a Bachelor of Performing Arts from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1988. During his younger years he served as an NCC cadet and took part in mime workshops and theatre while studying, which helped shape his later career in performance and filmmaking.

After his technical qualification he worked briefly as an electrical technician at Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd (IPCL) in Vadodara before moving into media and the performing arts. He spent thirteen years at Doordarshan as a production assistant early in his career.

Career

Antani’s professional life spans acting, directing and scriptwriting, with a strong base in Gujarati film, television and theatre. He made his mark as a director with the Gujarati feature Bhav Bhav Na Bharthar in 2000 and has directed several other regional films, short films and numerous television episodes. Between 2002 and 2011 he worked with Shree Falak Films, directing short films, TV serials, live shows and documentaries, and is credited with directing over a thousand episodes of Gujarati programming for DD Girnar, including titles such as Samvad, Sakhi and Hasya Samrat.

In broadcast leadership roles, Antani served as channel head at Transmedia Limited in 2011 and later became chief operating officer at Pranami Broadcasting Limited in Ahmedabad.

On screen, Antani first appeared as Mahatma Gandhi in a stage play called Sardar Patel in June 2000, a piece he wrote to mark Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 125th birth anniversary. His portrayal of Gandhi became a recurring element of his career: he has performed the role in numerous short films, television serials, stage plays and documentaries. His film acting debut came with the Gujarati-language feature Gandhiji My Mentor (2016), in which he played Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He has since appeared in Gujarati films including Pagal Kar Diya Toone (2019), Maare Shu (2022) and Mujib: The Making of Nation (2022).

Beyond regional cinema, Antani has taken supporting roles in Hindi-language television and streaming series, including an appearance as a driver in the Amazon Prime Video series The Family Man. His television credits also include episodes or appearances on Crime Patrol, Antral, Ajab Saas Ki Gajab Bahu, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and Barrister Babu. They have two children: a son, Tathya Antani, who works as a business analyst, and a daughter, Falak Antani, who is a freelance artist. His parents are Madhukant Antani and the late Jaykumari Antani.
