Early life and backgroundDeepak Kumar Baij was born on 14 July 1981 in Lohandiguda, Bastar, Chhattisgarh. He grew up in the Bastar region and completed higher education at Government Kakatiya Post Graduate College in Jagdalpur, where he earned postgraduate degrees in political science and economics and also holds an LL.B. He belongs to a Scheduled Tribe family and lists his hometown as Lohandiguda.
Career
Baij’s political career began in student and youth politics. He served as Bastar district president of a national student organisation in 2008 and shortly afterward took on a role with the Indian Youth Congress as a general secretary. He subsequently worked at the block level in the Congress organisation, serving the Lohandiguda Block Congress Committee and later as its full-time president.
In 2013 Baij was elected to the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly representing the Chitrakot constituency. He retained prominence in state politics, winning the Chitrakot assembly seat again in the 2018 state elections by a margin reported at 17,000 votes. In June 2019 he made the transition to national politics when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Bastar constituency.
Within the Congress party and parliamentary committees, Baij has held a variety of responsibilities. He served on standing committees that included external affairs and chemicals and fertilisers, and in 2023 he joined the Consultative Committee of the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs. On 12 July 2023 he was appointed President of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee, taking over state leadership for the party.
