Deepak Chopra (Author) Biography
Deepak Chopra is an Indian-born author, speaker and alternative medicine advocate who trained as a medical doctor before becoming a leading public figure推广
Early life and backgroundDeepak Chopra was born on October 22, 1946, in Delhi, then part of British India. He grew up in New Delhi and attended St. Columba’s School there before studying medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Chopra completed a medical degree and later immigrated to the United States in 1970 to continue his medical career, qualifying to practice in the U.S. after completing required examinations.
Career
Chopra began his professional life in conventional medicine, practicing internal medicine and endocrinology. By 1980 he had become chief of staff at New England Memorial Hospital. Over time his focus shifted toward mind-body approaches and practices drawn from Ayurvedic traditions and Transcendental Meditation.
In the mid-1980s Chopra became involved with the Transcendental Meditation movement after meeting Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He helped establish and lead organizations tied to Ayurvedic medicine, serving as founding president of the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine and as medical director of the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Health Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts.
Chopra moved into public-facing work as an author and speaker. His first listed writing debut is Creating Health (1987), and he has since authored many books. He has written approximately 80 books in total, with 21 of those reaching The New York Times bestseller list and translations into more than 40 languages. One of his best-known titles, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, remained on the New York Times Best Seller list for 72 weeks.
His 1993 book Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and his public visibility led to a high-profile television appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. That exposure produced significant sales for his work and also triggered controversy within the Transcendental Meditation movement, which at that time took steps to distance its centers from him.
Beyond writing, Chopra has held academic and advisory roles. He has served as an adjunct professor in marketing at Columbia Business School and at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He has also been on corporate and institutional boards, including service with the men’s clothing company Men’s Wearhouse beginning in 2004. In 2005 he was appointed a senior scientist at The Gallup Organization.
Entrepreneurial and philanthropic efforts have been a notable part of his later career. In 2006 he helped launch Virgin Comics with his son Gotham Chopra and entrepreneur Richard Branson. In 2009 he founded the Chopra Foundation, a tax-exempt organization devoted to promoting and researching approaches to health that emphasize mind-body connections. In 2014 he founded ISHAR, an online archive intended to provide open access to scholarship in integrative studies.
Public profile
Chopra has been a prominent advocate for Ayurvedic and integrative health approaches in the United States and has been described as a leading spokesman for Ayurveda. His public claims about mind-body influence and distance healing have attracted both popular interest and scientific scrutiny. In 1998 he received an Ig Nobel Prize in physics, a satirical award, for his interpretation of quantum physics in relation to life and related subjects.
Media appearances, lectures and books have driven Chopra’s prominence. He has been a frequent public speaker and at times commanded substantial speaking fees. A substantial portion of his bibliography has reached wide audiences; 21 of his books became New York Times bestsellers.
Personal life
Chopra is married to Rita Chopra. They have two children: son Gotham Chopra, who is an author, filmmaker and entrepreneur, and daughter Mallika Chopra, who is an author and entrepreneur. His father, Krishan Chopra, was a cardiologist, and his brother Sanjiv Chopra is a professor at Harvard Medical School.
