Early life and background

Deepak Dhar was born on 23 April 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in Mumbai and completed his schooling at Activity High School before graduating from the University of Mumbai. Dhar is Indian by nationality and is a Taurus by zodiac sign.

He is married to Bakul Dhar; the couple wed on 2 December 1999 and have a daughter, Anushka Dhar. Dhar also has a sister named Madhu Dhar. Physically, he is listed at about 1.88 meters (6'2") with black hair and black eyes.

Career

Dhar began building his career in television production in the late 1990s. In February 1998 he joined MTV as a senior producer, a role he held until December 2001. Around the turn of the millennium he moved to the Star Network as a Group Head, working there from January 2001 through January 2006.

In 2006 Dhar became a creative director at Endemol India, a company he co-founded in India with Rajesh Kamat in a small Andheri office. Early on, Dhar championed the adaptation and production of international reality formats for Indian audiences and presented Bigg Boss in 2006. He also focused on comedy programming and played a role in developing performers and shows that became prominent in Indian entertainment.

Dhar advanced to Managing Director of Endemol India in January 2008 and later served as Managing Director and CEO of Endemol Shine India from April 2012 until he stepped down from the managing director role in December 2017. During his years at Endemol/Endemol Shine, he produced a range of television shows and web series, including titles such as Three (2013), Brothers (2015), Bigg Boss (2006–2018), The Kapil Sharma Show (2018–2020), Anaamika (2014), Bigg Boss Kannada, Bigg Boss Telugu, and later projects such as The Trial (2023).

In April 2018 Dhar launched Banijay Asia, positioning it as his own production company. Under Banijay Asia he produced or executive-produced a slate of series and documentaries including Traffic (2018), Hostages (2019), Bombers (2019), Roar of the Lion (2019), Parchhayee: Ghost Stories by Ruskin Bond (2019), The Test Case (2017), Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi (2008) and The Voice (India) (2015). Roar of the Lion is noted as a documentary focused on the Chennai Super Kings IPL team, while Bombers is a football-themed series that debuted on the ZEE5 platform.

In April 2022 Dhar produced the series Into the Wild With Bear Grylls, which premiered on Disney Plus. Following Banijay’s global activities in India, the Banijay Asia Group announced the acquisition of Endemol Shine India on 17 July 2023. In the same month Dhar took on the role of Founder & Group CEO at Banijay Asia & Endemol Shine India. In this capacity he has focused on content strategy, partnerships, business development, and reputation-building across the combined group.

He was listed among the Economic Times Spencer Stuart ‘Hottest 40 under 40 Business Leaders’ in 2015 and was named among the ‘Most Promising Leaders of Asia’ at The Economic Times Asian Business Leaders Conclave in 2016.
