Early life and background

Deepak Dobriyal was born on 1 September 1975 in Satpauli Village in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. He spent part of his childhood after his family moved to Delhi, where he attended Government Boys Senior Secondary School Begumpur. Acting attracted him early: he took part in Ramleela performances with his brother and joined a theatre group while still in school. Although his father was initially concerned about acting as a career, family encouragement helped him pursue the stage.

Career

Dobriyal’s professional life began in theatre. His earliest recorded stage appearance was in a 1994 production of Tughlaq, in which he played Aazam. He worked with prominent Delhi-based companies, including Arvind Gaur’s Asmita theatre group, performing in a large and diverse repertoire that included Andha Yug, Final Solutions, Court-martial, Desire Under the Elms, The Good Person of Szechwan, The Good Doctor, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, and Accidental Death of an Anarchist. After roughly six years with Asmita he moved on to work with Pt. N. K. Sharma’s company, appearing in plays such as Aksar Maine Socha Hai, Hamaar Babuji Ki Chhatri, and Aao Saathi Sapna Dekhen.

Dobriyal moved into films with a brief appearance in Dil Hai Tumhara (2002) and then a more substantial role in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Maqbool (2003) as Thapa. He continued to build a career in Hindi cinema with performances in Omkara (2006) as Rajju Tiwary and in a series of films that demonstrated his range: Shaurya (2008), Delhi-6 (2009), Gulaal (2009), Daayen Ya Baayen (2010), Dabangg 2 (2012), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Lucknow Central (2017), and Laal Kaptaan (2019).

A turning point in his public recognition came with the role of Pappi in the romantic comedy-drama Tanu Weds Manu (2011). He reprised that character in the sequel Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), performances that brought him national attention and multiple awards for comic performance. He also played Shyam Prakash in Hindi Medium (2017) and Gopi Bansal in its sequel Angrezi Medium. Outside mainstream Hindi cinema, Dobriyal appeared in the Marathi film Baba (2019) as Madhav.

In more recent years he took on roles in streaming and contemporary projects, appearing as investigator Vikram Kamal in the ZEE5 black comedy Aafat-E-Ishq and playing Ashwatthama (Aashu) in the 2023 action thriller Bholaa, which featured Tabu and Ajay Devgn and was based on the Tamil film Kaithi. He promoted Bholaa with a television appearance as a celebrity guest on The Kapil Sharma Show.
