Early life and background

Deepak Kumar was born on 5 November 1987 in Jagatpur, Delhi. He is the eldest of three children of Raj Kumar, who works with the Delhi Tourism Department, and his mother Vimal Devi. Deepak spent part of his formative years at a gurukul in Pondha, Dehradun, where his education included study of the Vedas, Sanskrit and yoga. That traditional schooling influenced his personal habits and discipline and remains a recurring reference in his reflections on life and sport.

While at the gurukul he began sporting activities, initially taking up archery and representing Uttarakhand in competitions. A later medical issue forced him to stop archery, and he shifted his focus to shooting. He practised pistol shooting at the gurukul range before moving to rifle events. A meeting with shooter Jaspal Rana encouraged him to pursue shooting professionally, after which he joined formal training to refine his technique.

Career

Deepak is a non-commissioned officer in the Indian Air Force and holds the rank of Sergeant. He made his international debut in air rifle shooting at the Commonwealth Shooting Championship in 2017. Coached by Manoj Kumar, he competes in the 10 m air rifle events, including individual 60-shot (AR60), mixed team (ARMIX) and men’s team (ARTEAMM) disciplines.

Across national and international competitions he has collected medals in team and mixed events. His honours include silver medals at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta (10 m air rifle men), the 2019 ISSF World Cup in Munich (10 m air rifle mixed team), and the 2021 ISSF World Cup in New Delhi (air rifle team men). He has also taken bronze at the 2018 ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara in the mixed team event and at the 2019 Asian Championships in Doha in the 10 m air rifle men event. His progress at major meets earned him the Olympic quota for India in the 10 m air rifle event ahead of the Tokyo Games.

Deepak has described one of his most memorable moments as making the final in the 10 m air rifle at the 2017 ISSF World Cup in New Delhi. He has spoken openly about the influence of his coach Manoj Kumar, and he cites handicapped athletes as personal heroes for their performances and determination.

Public profile

Physically, Deepak is listed at approximately 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in) tall and around 55 kg (121 lb). He has black hair and black eyes. His education includes schooling at the gurukul in Pondha and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak, Haryana. He remains unmarried.

Deepak uses yoga to maintain calm and concentration for competition and has said that the values and training he received at the gurukul shaped both his outlook and his sporting approach. Outside sport he enjoys reading and riding his Royal Enfield motorcycle in his leisure time.

Notable moments and recognitions

He has been publicly recognised for his achievements by the Delhi government; he received a cash reward of 75 lakh rupees presented by the Chief Minister of Delhi. He was part of India’s squad for the Tokyo Olympics (the 2020 Games held in 2021) after securing an Olympic quota through his results at the Asian Championships.

Deepak has also experienced personal setbacks while travelling; in 2018 luggage was stolen from his car, and in 2020 he reported the theft of his Honda WR-V from a parking area in Keshav Puram, Delhi.

Latest updates

As of the most recent information, Deepak continues to compete internationally in 10 m air rifle events and trains under coach Manoj Kumar. He remains an active member of the Indian Air Force shooting contingent and continues to speak about his ambitions to win Olympic gold and to represent his sport and country with humility.
