Deepak Niwas Hooda was born on 10 June 1994 in Chamaria, Rohtak, and grew up in Haryana. He lost his mother at a very young age and his father while he was in school, circumstances that forced him to pause formal studies and take up work to support his family. He later returned to complete his education and graduated. As a youth he also worked as a teacher at the same institute where he had studied.

Hooda developed an early interest in sport. Alongside teaching, he committed to kabaddi practice, often travelling to nearby villages to train. He lists horse riding, cricket and swimming among his hobbies. He is known to be an early riser who prefers morning workouts.

He also won gold at the Dubai Kabaddi Masters in 2018 and led India to gold at the 2019 South Asian Games as captain.
