Early life and background

Deepender Singh Hooda was born on 4 January 1978 in Delhi. He comes from a family with several generations in public service; his father is Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his mother is Asha Hooda. His paternal lineage includes political and freedom-fighting figures such as his grandfather Ranbir Singh Hooda and great-grandfather Choudhary Matu Ram Hooda.

Hooda’s schooling took place at Mayo College, Ajmer and Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram. He earned a B.Tech from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and went on to complete an MBA in finance and strategy at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, Bloomington. Later he obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the Campus Law Centre at the University of Delhi. During his time at Kelley School he held leadership roles including president of the Asian Students Association and was recognized with honors such as Beta Gamma Sigma.

Career

Before entering politics, Hooda worked in the corporate sector. He began his career at Reliance Industries in the fabric manufacturing division and later joined Infosys as a software engineer. He spent more than two years at Sabre Corporation in Dallas as a senior manager in product strategy and marketing. He was offered a position at McKinsey & Company but chose to return to India to pursue a political career.

Hooda joined the Indian National Congress and contested a Rohtak Lok Sabha by-election in 2005. He won the Rohtak seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and retained it in 2014. Following his 2009 victory he served on parliamentary panels such as the Standing Committee on Human Resource Development and the Committee on Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. After the 2014 election he became a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy.

In 2019 he contested the Rohtak seat again but lost that election. In July 2020 he took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Haryana. During his Rajya Sabha tenure he served on the Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament, the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Finance, the Committee on External Affairs, and the Committee on Information and Communication Technology Management. He has also served on the board of the Council of IITs and as Vice Chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society.

Hooda’s parliamentary work has included involvement in initiatives related to education, healthcare and sports infrastructure in his region. Over his terms as a member of Parliament he contributed to the establishment of institutions and facilities such as IIM Rohtak and the AIIMS-II campus at Jhajjar, and supported construction of sports centres, stadiums, schools and colleges.
