Early life and background

Deepika Kumari was born on 13 June 1994 in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. She grew up in Ranchi and is the daughter of Shivnarayan Mahato and Geeta Mahato. Her upbringing was modest: her father worked as an auto-rickshaw driver and her mother was employed as a nurse at Ranchi Medical College. Financial constraints meant that in her early years she practised with improvised bamboo bows and arrows until she gained access to proper equipment.

Deepika is known by the nickname Deepa. She is Indian by nationality and follows Hinduism. Her astrological sign is Gemini.

Career

Deepika began her professional archery journey in 2006 when she joined the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur. The academy provided her with formal training, equipment, uniforms and a modest monthly stipend, enabling her to develop the skills that would carry her onto the international stage.

She captured attention internationally as a junior when she won the 11th Youth World Archery Championship in Ogden, Utah, USA in 2009 at age 15. Building on that success, Deepika went on to win individual and team gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the women’s recurve events.

In May 2012 she secured her first Archery World Cup individual recurve gold medal at Antalya, Turkey. That year her achievements were recognised nationally when she received the Arjuna Award, one of India’s top sporting honours. In 2016 the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, a civilian honour acknowledging her contributions to sport.

Deepika has been part of the Indian women’s archery team and has worked under coach Harendra Singh. She turned professional in 2006 and has sustained a prominent international presence in recurve archery.
