Early life and background

Deepinder Goyal was born on 26 January 1983 in Muktsar, Punjab. He grew up in a middle‑class household; his father taught botany and his mother worked as an English teacher. Goyal struggled academically in his early school years, at times performing below average, but his focus and results changed over time. He attended DAV College in Chandigarh for his higher secondary studies and went on to earn an engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

During his time at IIT Delhi he met Kanchan, a fellow student, and their relationship later became his first marriage. Goyal is fluent in English, Hindi and Punjabi. He has spoken publicly about childhood challenges, including a stutter and early academic setbacks, and has credited his experiences with shaping his approach to work and communication.

Career

Shortly after graduation in 2005, Goyal launched a delivery startup called Foodlet, which did not succeed. In January 2006 he joined Bain and Company in Gurgaon as an Associate Consultant and remained there for about three years. His exposure at Bain helped him recognise a demand for restaurant menu information and sparked the idea that would become his next venture.

In July 2008 Goyal and his Bain colleague Pankaj Chaddah launched Foodiebay, a restaurant listing and recommendation portal that later evolved into Zomato. Goyal left Bain in November 2009 to focus full time on the business. The company received its first external investment in 2010 from Sanjeev Bikhchandani of InfoEdge and initially relied on advertising revenue, allowing restaurants to promote their offerings on the platform.

Over the following years Zomato expanded its services. In 2015 the platform began enabling food ordering, and the company shifted greater emphasis to B2B technology solutions to support transactions and operations. In January 2020 Zomato completed an all‑stock acquisition of Uber Eats India, with Uber taking a 9.99 percent stake in Zomato. In July 2023 Zomato reported its first profitable quarter since founding, recording a net profit in the first quarter of the 2022–2023 fiscal year. The company operates in more than two dozen countries, including the UAE, Sri Lanka, Qatar, the UK and Indonesia.

Goyal has also been active as an investor and operator beyond Zomato. His investment portfolio includes stakes in around 16 startups, such as ChefKart and Unacademy. He acquired Blinkit in August 2022 for $568 million. Up until March 2023 he was on the board of Urban Company but stepped down after Blinkit moved into home services. Since June 2021 he has been a designated partner at First Lap LLP.

On New Year’s Eve 2022 he donned the role of a Zomato delivery person and completed several app deliveries himself.
