Early life and background

Deepti Bhatnagar was born on 30 September 1967 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. She completed her schooling in Delhi and went on to study at Chaudhary Charan Singh University (formerly Meerut University). During her school and college years she was active in the NCC and trained in Indian classical vocal music for nearly nine years, reaching the visharad level. As a young student she also played hockey and badminton at the state level.

While still in school she ran a small business selling home furnishings and later opened a boutique, an early entrepreneurial phase that saw her travel to Mumbai for work. In 1990, during her first year of college, she won the Eves Weekly Miss India contest and represented India at the Miss International pageant in Nagasaki, Japan. That success led her into modelling and commercial work.

Career

Deepti moved from modelling into acting and television. Her screen acting credits include a mix of regional and Hindi films throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Early film appearances include a role in the Hindi film Ram Shastra (1995) and parts in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam films such as Pelli Sandadi (1996), Dharma Chakkaram (1997), Galate Aliyandru (2000) and a special appearance in Rakkilipattu (2007). She also took parts in a number of Hindi films across the late 1990s and early 2000s, including Dulhan Banoo Main Teri (1999), Mann (1999) and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001), among others.

On television Deepti began appearing as an actor in series such as Yeh Hai Raaz (1998), where she played a police officer. She moved into hosting and production with shows like Musafir Hoon Yaaron (2001). Her profile rose significantly with Yatra, a religious travel series broadcast on Star Plus that became one of her best-known projects.

Beyond acting and presenting, Deepti founded Deepti Bhatnagar Productions Pvt. Ltd. and produced several television serials for Indian channels, including Yatra (Star Plus), Kabhi Aaye Naa Judaai (Star Plus), Mohalla Mohabbat Wala (SAB) and Main Kab Saas Banoongi (SAB). She has also worked as a director on Hindi television projects such as Mohe Rang De (Colors), Jo Biwi Se Kare Pyaar (SAB) and Safarnama – The Exotic North East (DD National).
