Early life and background

Deepu Srivastava was born on 9 April 1970 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in the Kidwai Nagar area of Kanpur, he completed his university education at Kanpur University, graduating in 1993. He comes from a family that includes five brothers and at least one sister; his father, Ramesh Chandra Srivastava, worked as a government employee and wrote poetry, while his mother, Saraswati Srivastava, is described as a homemaker.

Career

Deepu began performing on stage after finishing his studies and built his early career in Kanpur before relocating to Mumbai in 1998 to pursue greater opportunities. He has worked as both a standup comedian and an actor, appearing on numerous television comedy programs and in films.

His film debut came in 2009 with Meri Padosan, in which he played a supporting role. That year he also appeared alongside his elder brother on the comedy show Raju Hazir Ho. Across the following years he took small roles in Hindi films such as Hello Darling and Bhavnao Ko Samjho, and later appeared in Money Back Guarantee (2014) and Vodka Diaries (2018). In 2021 he acted in the short film Speed Dial with Shreyas Talpade.

On television, Deepu has participated in a number of comedy shows: Funjabbi Chak De on Star One (2007), Laughter Express on a local Bhojpuri channel (2010), The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on StarPlus and Comedy Ka Badsshah – Hasegaa India on Sony TV (both in 2017), and other programs including the Laughter Show on StarPlus (2019). He has also been invited to perform on news and talk programs, including LIVE India (2012), News18 India’s Lapete Me Neta Ji (2018), and a talk appearance on 94.3 FM (2020).

Deepu has maintained an active live performance schedule. He has performed at more than 2,500 venues across India and internationally in countries such as Dubai, Muscat, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Fiji, Nepal, and Mauritius. He has appeared at corporate events and college fests, including shows for Hero MotoCorp and performances at IBMR and St Francis Institute of Management & Research. He is a member of the Mimicry Artist Association Mumbai (MAAM), an organization set up by Johnny Lever, and he runs Safal Entertainments Pvt. Ltd., a company that organises concerts and events.

Over the years Deepu Srivastava has received several honours. These include the Raja Shree Agrasen Award in Rajasthan (2016), the Kayastha Ratna award in Udaipur (2017), the Kanpur Ratan Samman presented by My Home Power Limited (MHPL) (2017), a Lions Clubs International award (2018), and a certificate of appreciation from Films Today Magazine for humanitarian work during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020). He also received the Bharat Ratna Dr. Ambedkar Award for comedy in Mumbai in 2020.
