Denis Cheryshev Biography

Denis Dmitriyevich Cheryshev is a Russian professional footballer, known for his pace and wide play. Born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1990, he developed in Spain

Early life and background

Denis Dmitriyevich Cheryshev was born on 26 December 1990 in Nizhny Novgorod, then part of the Soviet Union. His father, Dmitri Cheryshev, was a professional footballer, and the family relocated to Spain when Denis was a child after his father accepted a playing opportunity there. Growing up in a footballing household, Denis began his formal football education in Spain, entering Sporting Gijón’s youth setup at around age six. He later moved with his family to Burgos and joined that club’s youth academy before being recruited by Real Madrid’s youth system at age 12.

Cheryshev holds both Russian and Spanish nationality. As a youngster in Spain he attended a preparatory school to learn the language, and spent his formative years in Spanish academies, which shaped his technical and tactical development as a winger.

Career

Denis Cheryshev spent the bulk of his youth and early professional development inside the Real Madrid organization, joining their academy at 12 and remaining with the club for 14 years. During that period he had limited opportunities with Real Madrid’s senior side, appearing twice for the first team, and spent time on loan at several Spanish clubs as part of his pathway to regular first-team football.

Following those loan spells, Cheryshev moved to Villarreal on a permanent transfer in 2016, signing a contract that kept him at the club through to 2021. He has been deployed primarily as a winger, wearing the number 7 shirt at Villarreal and the number 6 jersey for the Russian national team.

International career

Although eligible to represent either Spain or Russia because of his dual nationality, Cheryshev elected to play for Russia at senior international level. He made his Russia debut on 14 November 2012 in a friendly against the United States. The highlight of his international career came at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Russia, when he scored twice in the opening match — a 5–0 victory over Saudi Arabia — significantly raising his profile at home and abroad.

Public profile

On the field, Cheryshev is known for his role on the flank, combining pace and direct attacking play. He has been coached by figures including Stanislav Cherchesov at the national-team level and Javier Calleja at club level. His physical profile lists him at approximately 1.73 m (5'8") tall and around 75 kg (165 lbs), with blue eyes and medium blonde hair.

Family and personal life

Denis is the son of former professional footballer Dmitri Cheryshev. He has a brother named Danila. Public information notes that he has been in a relationship with Cristina Cobo since 2016. He is unmarried and has no children reported in the available material.

Latest updates

As of the most recent information, Cheryshev remained associated with Villarreal following his 2016 permanent move from Real Madrid, a transfer that tied him to the club until 2021. His reputation was bolstered by his World Cup performance in 2018, which remains one of the standout moments of his career.
