Early life and backgroundDenzil Smith was born on 6 November 1960 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into an Anglo-Indian family. He grew up in Bandra and attended St. Andrews High School before moving on to RD National College. He later completed postgraduate studies in English Literature and received vocal training at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. Smith’s father, Benjamin John Smith, was musically inclined and performed in amateur theatre and choral groups; that early exposure to music and stagecraft influenced Denzil’s own attraction to the performing arts.
Career
Smith began performing while still at school, appearing at about age 15 in a production of Son of Man. His formal theatre debut came with the play Man Friday by Adrian Mitchell. Early stage work included memorable collaborations in Pearl Padamsee’s Les Liaisons Dangereuse, where he worked alongside performers such as Ratna Pathak and Naseeruddin Shah.
