Early life and backgroundDevdutt Pattanaik was born on 11 December 1970 in Chembur, Mumbai. He grew up in Chembur and attended Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School before moving on to Ramnarain Ruia College. He completed his medical degree at Grant Medical College, Mumbai, and later pursued further study in comparative mythology at the Sanskrit Department of Mumbai University. His parents are Prafulla Kumar Pattanaik and Sabitri Pattanaik Das, and he has two sisters, Seema Pattanaik and Sami Pattanaik.
Career
Pattanaik’s professional journey spans medicine, corporate consulting, writing and broadcasting. Although he trained as a medical doctor, he developed a parallel career focused on mythology and storytelling. His first book, Shiva: An Introduction, was published in 1997. He went on to write extensively on Hindu myths, producing books for adults and children as well as titles that apply mythic ideas to leadership and business.
