Deven Bhojani was born on 25 November 1969 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into a Gujarati family. He grew up in the same city that would later become the primary base for his work in theatre, television and film. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce and later studied filmmaking, including coursework at the University of Southern California, after attending Narsee Monjee Institutes of Management Studies in Mumbai.

Bhojani began his career in the performing arts as a theatre actor, appearing in numerous Gujarati stage productions. His first notable screen appearance came in 1987 when he played the role of Nitya in the television series Malgudi Days. That early TV work preceded his involvement in Hindi cinema: in 1992 he assisted director Mansoor Khan on Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and also appeared onscreen as Ghanshyam (Ghanshu), the friend of Aamir Khan’s character.
