Early life and background

Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis was born on 22 July 1970 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He grew up in Nagpur and attended New Indira Convent Bori School and Saraswati Vidyalaya before completing higher secondary at Dharampeth Junior College. He earned a Bachelor of Laws from Government Law College, Nagpur in 1992 and later pursued postgraduate studies in Germany at the Dahlem School of Education, where he completed a postgraduate program in business management and a diploma in project management in 1998.

Fadnavis comes from a politically active family. His father, Gangadharrao Fadnavis, served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. His mother is Sarita Fadnavis. He was exposed to political activism from a young age and became involved in student and youth organisations while at college.

Career

Fadnavis began his political journey with student and youth wings associated with the broader Sangh Parivar and BJP ecosystem. He joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the mid-1990s and took on roles in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), serving as a ward president and later as a state vice president. In 1992 he contested a municipal election from the Ram Nagar Ward in Nagpur and was elected as a corporator that year, becoming the youngest member of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation at age 22.

He went on to serve as Mayor of Nagpur in 1997. By 1999 he had been elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Nagpur West. He retained a legislative role through subsequent elections, winning again from Nagpur West in 2004 and from the newly formed Nagpur South West seat in 2009. The BJP appointed him Maharashtra unit president in 2013, reflecting his rising profile within the party.

In October 2014 Fadnavis became the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra at the age of 44, making him one of the youngest to hold that office. He completed a full term as chief minister and in 2019 won the Nagpur South West seat again. Late in 2019 he briefly took oath for a second time as chief minister in a short-lived arrangement with support from a faction of the NCP. On 30 June 2022 he took office as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra after a change in state political alignments, and on 5 December 2024 he was sworn in as Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a third time.

Throughout his career Fadnavis has held party and government posts at municipal, state and party levels, and has been widely identified with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra.
