Early life and background

Deveshi Sahgal was born in 1987 and raised in New Delhi. She grew up in a household where classical music was part of regular family life; her parents organised baithaks that exposed her to live music from an early age. Her father, Rajesh Sahgal, owns a stud farm in Delhi, and Deveshi has spoken about spending much of her childhood around horses and helping her father with riding- and tent-pegging related tasks.

Deveshi began formal training in Hindustani classical music at the age of four under Gurinder Kaur, a disciple of Kishori Amonkar. That early classical foundation shaped her later work and gave her the technical base to move between classical, Sufi and contemporary forms. She later pursued visual arts as well, earning a diploma in sculpting from Chelsea College of Art in London after attending Delhi College of Arts and Commerce.

Beyond film work, Deveshi has recorded and released independent music, including tracks and albums titled Once Upon a Dream, Hollows, and Fields of Hope. She shares much of her independent output via her YouTube channel.

Her festival appearances reflect her roots in Sufi and Urdu cultural spaces. She has performed at Jashn-e-Rekhta, the large Urdu language festival in Delhi, and has been involved with Jahan-e-Khusrau, the annual Sufi music festival where she shared a stage with the Sufi vocalist Abida Parveen in 2013.

In 2019 Deveshi received a nomination for Upcoming Female Vocalist at the Mirchi Music Awards, recognising her rising presence in the music scene.

In 2023 she joined a collaborative rendition of the Punjabi folk song "Das Main Ki Pyaar Vichon Khatteya" for Coke Studio Bharat, performing alongside Kanwar Grewal, Amira Gill, Tajdar Junaid, and Vijay Yamla Jatt.
