Early life and backgroundDhanraj Pillay was born on 16 July 1968 in Khadki, near Pune in Maharashtra, and grew up in the Ordnance Factory Staff Colony where his father worked as a groundsman. He spent his childhood playing hockey in modest conditions, often making do with broken sticks and discarded balls. His elder brother Ramesh Pillay, who played in the Mumbai league, helped introduce him to more structured competitive hockey and guided his early development.
Pillay attended The S V S High School in Khadki. He was raised in a multilingual household and is fluent in Marathi, Tamil (his mother tongue), Hindi, and English.

Dhanraj Pillay emerged onto the national scene as a teenager, competing in junior tournaments and making his senior national tournament debut in Delhi in 1988. He impressed enough to be invited by coach Joquim Carvalho to play for Mahindra & Mahindra in Mumbai, a move that helped launch his professional career.
Pillay made his international debut on 20 December 1989 against China at the Allwyn Cup in New Delhi. A forward by position, he went on to enjoy a long and prolific international career that spanned from 1989 to 2004. During that period he featured in 339 matches and scored approximately 170 goals.
