Early life and background

Dharmendra Yadav was born on 3 February 1979 in Saifai village, Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in Saifai and completed his early schooling there before moving to Allahabad for higher studies. At Allahabad University he studied political science and law, earning an LLB in 2002 and an M.A. in 2004. During his time at university he was active in student leadership.

Yadav comes from a political family. His father is Abhay Ram Yadav and his mother is Jay Devi. He is part of the Yadav family that includes several well-known politicians: his grandfather is Mulayam Singh Yadav and his cousin is Akhilesh Yadav. Siblings named in public records include Anurag Yadav and Sandhya Yadav. He is married to Neelam Yadav and they have two children, a daughter and a son.

Career

Dharmendra Yadav entered active politics in the early 2000s. In 2003–04 he was appointed Block Pramukh of Saifai. The following year he contested national elections and won a Lok Sabha seat from Badaun, beginning a parliamentary career that brought him multiple terms in the lower house.

He represented Badaun in the 14th Lok Sabha after his 2004 victory, and was re-elected in 2009 to the 15th Lok Sabha. In 2014 he retained the Badaun seat for a third term, winning election to the 16th Lok Sabha. During his parliamentary tenure he served on several committees, including the petitions committee, the parliamentary standing committee on agriculture, and advisory committees.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election he lost the Badaun seat. In 2022 he contested the Azamgarh bypoll after Akhilesh Yadav vacated the Azamgarh seat; he lost that by-election to the BJP candidate Dinesh Lal Yadav (Nirahua) by 8,679 votes. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election he won the Azamgarh seat, defeating the BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav by 161,035 votes.

Outside elected office, Dharmendra Yadav held leadership roles such as the chairmanship of a cooperative bank in Uttar Pradesh between 2005 and 2007. His political affiliation has been with the Samajwadi Party since 2004.
