Early life and background

Dhruv Sangari was born in New Delhi in 1981 and grew up in the Jangpura neighbourhood. He is the son of author Kumkum Sangari and painter Mahendra 'Manu' Sangari. He began formal music training at a young age, studying Hindustani classical music and learning the tabla from around age seven.

At Delhi University he continued his musical education, receiving instruction from teachers including Dr. Najma Parveen Ahmed, Dr. Krishna Bisht and Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan. During this period he also developed an interest in Sufi traditions and qawwali singing, studying qawwali under Ustad Meraj Ahmed Nizami of the Qawwal-Bachhe Gharana at the dargah of Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi.

Career

After completing his degree at Delhi University in 2001, Dhruv formed a Sufi band called Rooh. Over the years he has performed on a variety of stages and broadcast platforms, including performances on ETV Urdu and scripted and anchored a programme on DD Urdu titled Raagon ki Haseen Duniya.

His work spans traditional mystic poetry and contemporary collaborations. He has sung verses by Kabir, Amir Khusro, Mira Bai, Baba Farid and Bulleh Shah, and has taught Sufi music at museums, universities and other institutions. In 2008 his debut album Jet-Lag was released by Phat-Phish Records; the record was a collaboration that involved Swiss electronic musicians Lionel Dentan and David Scruffari together with the band Da-Saz.

Dhruv has also collaborated internationally. In 2011 he worked with Timothy Hill and Eric Thomas for the Nasreen & Alam Sher Foundation in the United States on an album titled Hope. He appears on Coke Studio MTV in Mumbai with a performance of Saim Chishty’s poem Haq Ali Maula with his band Humble Mystic, a rendition connected to the tradition of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. In 2017 he contributed vocal work to the score of the film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle in collaboration with composer Nitin Sawhney.

He has crossed into mainstream film and popular music as well, providing vocals on notable Bollywood tracks including the song Lutt Jawaan from the film Commando: A One Man Army and the Coke Studio (India) MTV track Kyun Na composed by Amit Trivedi.
