Diana Fram Edulji was born on 26 January 1956 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in that city, she showed an early interest in sport and competed at junior national level in basketball and table tennis before concentrating on cricket. Her hobby interests include biking and playing football. She is Indian by nationality and practices Christianity.

Career

Edulji made her Test debut for India on 31 October 1976 against the West Indies at Bangalore and played her first One Day International on 1 January 1978 versus England at Kolkata. Over a career that spanned from 1976 to 1993 she represented India in 20 Tests and 34 ODIs. Her final recorded international appearance was an ODI for India on 29 July 1993 against Denmark at Slough.

A left‑arm bowler and useful lower‑order batter, Edulji became the first Indian woman to reach 100 international wickets. She played domestic cricket for the Railways team in India and is remembered for a composed presence on the field. Early in her cricketing development she caught the eye of former Test cricketer Lala Amarnath at a coaching camp, which helped open opportunities with Railways and the national side.

After retiring from international play, Edulji remained involved in sport administration and related roles. She served as a senior sports officer with Western Railway and held posts connected with women’s cricket governance, including membership of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s women’s committee. In 2009 she was the manager of the Indian women’s team.

Edulji’s contributions to Indian sport have been recognized with major national honours. She received the Arjuna Award in 1983 and the Padma Shri in 2002. A notable incident during her playing days occurred on India’s 1986 tour of England when she, as captain, was not permitted to enter the Lord’s pavilion; she publicly criticized the Marylebone Cricket Club following that episode.

In January 2017 the Supreme Court of India constituted a committee to administer the BCCI and named Edulji as one of its members alongside Vinod Rai, Vikram Limaye and Ramachandra Guha. This appointment followed the removal of the BCCI’s president and secretary as part of efforts to implement judiciary recommendations for cricket governance reform.
