Dilipkumar Lakhi Biography

Dilipkumar Vishindas Lakhi is an Indian diamond merchant, entrepreneur and investor who chairs the Lakhi Group. A longtime figure in Mumbai’s jewelry trade

Early life and background
Dilipkumar Vishindas Lakhi was born into a Sindhi family with roots in Shikarpur (now in Pakistan). His family’s connection to the gem and jewellery trade predates the Partition: in 1944 his father, Vishindas Holaram, founded a precious-stone business in Jaipur. From his teenage years, Dilipkumar assisted in the family enterprise while continuing his studies.

In his early twenties, drawn by opportunities in India’s growing diamond-processing industry, he moved to Mumbai in 1972 and began working in the city’s historic Zaveri Bazaar. That period marked the start of his long association with the Mumbai diamond trade and the expansion of his family’s business interests.

Career
Dilipkumar Lakhi rose through the ranks of the family enterprise to lead the Lakhi Group, which is built around two companies: Vishindas Holaram (established 1944) and Dilipkumar V. Lakhi (established 1970). Under his leadership the group expanded its cutting and polishing operations and grew into one of India’s prominent diamond exporters, trading in more than 20 countries and supplying both international and domestic diamond firms.

The family’s operations are spread across several geographies, with siblings and relatives overseeing related businesses in Hong Kong, Dubai and New York. Dilipkumar’s role has included steering the group’s strategic direction and chairing its activities as it built large-scale diamond manufacturing capacity.

Beyond the gem trade, Lakhi has been active as an investor. He has held significant publicly disclosed shareholdings across multiple companies and sectors. By mid-2023 he held over 1% stakes in 13 companies, and his portfolio has included shares in firms such as Avon More Capital, Hindustan Fluorocarbons, Unitech Limited, GOCL Corporation, Diligent Media Corporation, TRF Limited and others. He has preferred investment niches with lower competition and applied trend-based and contrarian thinking to select opportunities. He also served as a director for several companies, joining Grandiose Infrastructure Venture Enterprises in 2007 and taking directorships at firms including Sanjivani Urja Power and Surya Chaitanya Power in 2010. On 1 November 2022 he became a director of Vishindas Holaram Private Limited.

Public profile
Lakhi’s contributions to the gem and jewellery sector have been recognized with industry and civic honors. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the India Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council awards in March 2016. Earlier, in 2001, the Sindhi Chamber of Commerce in Chennai presented him with an Outstanding Citizens Award for his public service.

The Lakhi Group is also known for philanthropic activities in education, healthcare and religious patronage. The family and its companies have supported educational foundations, sponsored school construction and scholarships in rural areas, endowed programs with the Gemological Institute of America for education in India, and funded medical equipment and NGO relief work. The group has a history of donating gold and other gifts to temples and religious institutions; gifts to various shrines over the years have included large quantities of gold donated for adornment.

Personal life
Dilipkumar Lakhi is married to Karuna; the couple wed in 1976. Their son, Chirag Dilipkumar Lakhi, is a businessman and director of Vishindas Holaram Private Limited. They have two daughters, Abhilasha and Prerna. Dilipkumar’s father was the entrepreneur Vishindas Holaram; his mother’s name is not publicly listed in the available material. He has several brothers who are active in family enterprises: Motiram V. Lakhi, Girdharilal V. Lakhi, Prakash V. Lakhi and Deepak V. Lakhi. Nephews are also involved in the group’s polished-diamond sales.
